The Asthma Corner
: Asthma medication delivery devices
: Administering spacer with mask

This method is used in young children generally under age 3 years.

Instructions
  1. Prepare the canister aerosol medication ("puffer", or metered dose inhaler) by removing the cap.

  2. Shake the canister.

  3. Place the canister "tail-up" with its mouthpiece in the rubber opening of the spacer device.

  4. Place the mask of the spacer over the mouth and nose of your child, making a good seal.

  5. Press down on the canister, releasing a puff of medication into the spacer.

  6. Hold the mask in place until your child has taken at least 6 breaths, as seen from movements of a "window" on the mask.

Helpful hints
  • Rinse your device with warm water weekly and let it dry in room air.

  • If the flap valve is torn or not working properly, your device should be replaced.

  • The spacer should always be kept in its plastic container when not in use.

Using inhalers properly is not always easy but can help your child enjoy successful treatment at home and less frequent trips to the hospital.

If despite your best efforts with inhaled medications your child's asthma is not well controlled or worsens, seek medical attention immediately!
