The Asthma Corner

What role can my child play?

Children need to be given a role to play if they are to gain a sense of responsibility and control over their condition. Children who keep their own record of symptoms and medication use are usually better at following their treatment program. So encourage your child to keep his or her own chart.

Involve the child in finding specific triggers and irritants, and in taking preventative steps. And involve the child in drawing up action plans for different situations, so he knows in advance when and what preventative steps should be taken, and how to deal with emergencies. After all, it's essential that children with asthma help monitor their condition and know how to act accordingly.
