Question: My son will be 3 years old soon and has an ear infection and was prescribed “Clavulin”. We are wondering if we can give him “Benylin” along with it, as he has an awful cough.
DR.PAUL: Please note that cough and cold medications like Benylin should not be given to children under 6 years of age. Antibiotics are for the ear infection. Usually ear infections are accompanied by a cold with symptoms such as coughing and nasal congestion. In older children, cough syrups can be given while taking antibiotics, but only should be given if the cough is making the child uncomfortable. Also, if a child has fever, Tempra (Tylenol) or acetaminophen can also be given while the child is on antibiotics. This is especially true during the first 48 hours of antibiotic treatment, the time usually needed for the antibiotics to start working.
