Question: my 2 month old baby keeps having a runny eye and the doctor days it is a blocked tear duct . Is this a problem?
DR.PAUL: A blocked tear duct presents with a constantly runny or teary eye and is usually noticed during the first few weeks of life. The initial treatment is to gently massage the area between the nose and eye area and this may open up the ducts…if this fails then a probe procedure is needed; Under general anesthesia a tiny probe(a tiny iron rod) is placed in the tear duct opening by an ophthalmologist to stretch or unblock it, gebnerally solving the problem for good. This is a very minor operation.
